Salvete,

While I know that everyone has their own preference when it comes to leather vs cloth for this item, I have received many PMs requesting the powerpoint pattern for the leather subarmalis I made for my lorica hamata. This one is not designed for wear with a lorica segmentata -- I am currently making one to a different design for that one.

This thread is NOT intended to open a debate on the relative merits of one material or another -- when it comes to the subarmalis, opinions are like posterior orifices -- everybody has one. Big Grin

Instead, I just thought I'd post a couple of pics for those that are interested in a leather subarmalis, and renew my offer of the pattern/diagram in powerpoint for any who might like me to send them one.

Cheers,

Calvus
That's quite a nice Garment you've made there! Big Grin

One question.. why two side openings? One could have sufficed and then slide into is from the side to do up the one set of buckles.
Adrian -- that's a great question! Confusedhock:

I think because I was thinking about relative girth -- I am 45 and still in pretty good shape since I'm in the Army. I figured that if I...er...expanded (or if I wore thicker clothing in the winter or loaned the garment to another legionary) that I wanted it to be adjustable symmetrically.

I'm the "centurio" of the local group here in Atlanta and loan the guys my kit as they need it.

As it is, I leave it buckled and slip it on over my head.

Other than that, I admit I have no good reason! Your way would be just as good! Big Grin

I too have experienced my hamata shrinking! Especially over the Christmas period for some reason!
Veritas! :!:
Adrian you can always pass that shrinking scale shirt to your skinny friend in the US
Paul,

I think that what Adrian and I are saying is that our garments are "flexible" -- they both expand AND contract based on seasonal conditions!

The good thing about metal and leather is that they tend to...er...encourage physical fitness in a re-enactor.

LOL!

Good try Paul! But, I made the squamata to be adjustable where my hamata wasn't! And I love my squamata!
Adrian,

EVERYBODY on RAT loves your squamata. Big Grin

If I were you, I'd keep it locked up and go to events with my own praetorian guard!

That looks like the ideal sub for a hamata Col Gibbons!

Could I get a copy of that pattern! Please! Smile

Regards
Absolutely, Frater.

Send me a PM with your email address and I will get it to you right away.

I'll also include these pics with the diagram to help give you an idea of a finished product to compare with the pattern.

IMHO

a hamata shrinking is less worriesome than a segmentata shrinking......

and less painfull

M.VIB.M.
I've been considering making a leather subarmalis for my hamata for a while. I already have a padded linen one, but my hamata is a tight fit and its diffucult to put both on at the same time! I figure a leather garment will be easier to drop a hamata over. Also ... if I take off the sleeves, I can get in some pteruges! Since I am tired of being mistaken for a Viking (I'm a Late Roman) this Roman-defining part of the garment will serve a great purpose.

But still unsure.
Understand completely.

If you send me a PM, I'm happy to send you the pattern regardless of what you decide.

Salve,

Don't give in! Big Grin Keep explaining, educating the natives! With a short-sleeved hamata, i think you'd be sacrificing your Late Roman appearance. especially for your role as a limitaneus or scout, pteruges would not be an addition.

If they insist you're a Viking, insist they get their school fees back.
