I did my outer layer in leather with the pteruges on shoulder and hem attached. This can be worn over a linnen padded subarmalis. It keeps damp out (and somewhat in). I recently did a trial wear at the Xanten event in Germany for a good 3.5 hours, and was not at all disappointed at the comfort of the leather keeping the hamata off my tunic. As I am still working on it, I want to add an extra layer of pteruges in the shoulder section and perhaps along the hem, I am not yet set to post a how-to, but give me a PM and I can send you some pictures through regular e-mail. I STILL haven't mastered the act of posting images through RAT forum  By the way, I was informed pteruges were NOT exclusive to centurions, several stela and monuments bear this out.
