True, some of the modern cattle has better bone. But most commercially available dog bones come from cattle that hasn't moved around a lot I guess

Salve Brennivs,
I have just found this site which gives other options. I'm not sure about hydrogen peroxide though as the acidity could weaken the bones. It depends what you are going to make. Caustic soda is fine to use as long as you are careful and is more effective than sodium carbonate*. This method is used by biologists to prepare specimens.
http://www.celticgarb.org/crafts/knucklebone.html
It states in the article not to use aluminium pans or cutlery when boiling, that is a very good point. You'll get hydrogen bubbles!
hock:
In fact you probably won'tneed to boil when using caustic soda, so a plastic pot will be OK
* If you try the sodium carbonate method instead , don't use biological washing powder as a substitute- the enzymes in it will begin to digest the bones

Just make sure you take all the necessary precautions, and dont get it on your skin, as it is very 'caustic' so to speak! Goggles, rubber gloves and apron.....gauntlet type gloves would be best!

P.S. Joking aside, do be very careful with that stuff. Start with a 1% solution in water and wear gloves and goggles
at least.

cleaning bones...
first, I use the descendants of Spanish cattle brought to the USA 400 years ago, and which ran wild until taken from the wildlife park as they thinned the herd. I bought a few and all my cattle come from that breed. Peter Connolly said that he believed that the photos looked like the cattle the Romans used, which were originally from North Africa and then came via Spain. My cattle are constantly roaming, they don't have sheds or barns.
To clean the bones, I leave them out near a red ant nest (under an over turned wheel barrow) for a few weeks. The bones are ivory colored unless they are 2 or 3 years out in the sun, when they turn white, but more difficult to work, due to dehydration and other weathering (the sun bakes the bones).
No messy chemicals, no 'impact statements', and I doubt I want to go through the paperwork to ship bones and horns to the EU!
