I wasn't correcting anyone, just posting relevant info from Service in the Roman Army as it had been mentioned earlier.

Somehow the system didn't always work like it should: an Egyptian recruit to the Misenate fleet received his viaticum when he arrived there from Egypt (BGU 423). Compensation afterwards works as well, I guess. Big Grin

I know this is a deviation, but Corbulo spent 2 years RETRAINING the legions he used in the east, so I would agree with Carlton, it could depend on the General, but there must have been a basic period for training to the minimum acceptablr standard in "normal" situations.

It would seem that the Roman's would have a systematic way of training troops. Just because we don't know what it is, doesn't mean it didn't exist. They were systematic in every other eay. Why would they skip military training?
