I HAVE SEEN THE FUTURE OF ROCK AND ROLL AND IT'S
"THE BLACKBOX REVELATION"
I always wanted to write something like this. Rock music has the strange habit of being there, inspiring people, becoming predictable, dying, and suddenly renewing itself. I remember how the Sex Pistols and the Ramones were suddenly there (I was twelve); I remember Nirvana; I remember the Smashing Pumpkins. And I remember that, when the Pumpkins decided to stop, I thought that I would not appreciate the next rebirth. I'm forty-one; I'm losing interest.
But I was lucky.
As it happens, my favorite pub is part of a cultural center in Amsterdam that is owned by the Belgian government ([url:2rnk69ra]http://www.brakkegrond.nl/). In this way, theater acts that are popular in Belgium have a stage in Holland. (There is a similar Dutch cultural center, in Brussels.) So I often see Belgian rock bands; many of them are really very good. But tonight, I saw something "that really shook us alive... and dead".
This band is called The Blackbox Revelation. Imagine The White Stripes playing "I wanna be your dog" by Iggy and the Stooges. I also had to think about the original version, by The Leaves, of "Hey Joe". This was rock as it ought to be. Loud, mean, full of energy.
The two musicians are very young. They still have to make their first CD. And when they sang about a car, I was wondering if they had a driver's license. But this only proves that age is unimportant. This was one of the most brilliant concerts I have ever seen.
