A question for all Roman re-enactors
#1
I have a question for all the Roman re-enactors on the list. Well actually it’s two questions, so I guess this is more like a very small survey.

First, what type of sword (or swords) do you have?

Second, exactly how long is the grip?

Odd questions, I know, but I’d appreciate any help

Thanks,
Both are Deepeeka pompeii types. Both grips are about a half inch or so longer than they need to be.
Magnus/Matt
Well, maybe mine won't be very useful for you...

It's a 4th AD spatha with eagle hilt. I don't have it with me now to measure the hilt, but it's a hand and half long

I made it so long because I had to keep with the long hilts on the Venice Tetrarchs!
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

Here's mine:

The gladius is a Mainz Rheingonheim from Albion and the scabbard was made by Cristian Fletcher. The little knob at the scabbard tip is a recent replacement. I lost the original at Roman Days. It's amazing what you can find at Lowe's. I took a standard brass dresser knob and reshaped it to more closely match those shown in the Vindonissa catalog.

Mine was is a copy of a Vindonissa gladius, 19" long but only 1 1/2" wide. The grip is 4", deep grooved bone.
Legio XX
Avete!

Presumably you only want ROMAN swords, or this will take me a while!

My old Del Tin Pompeii has a bone grip which I made, 3-1/2" long.

I made the wood grip for my Mark Morrow gladius hispaniensis longer than that, c. 3-7/8", to avoid having to cut the threaded end off the tang.

Also have a Deepeeka Mainz with its original bone grip, though it's out on loan right now so I don't know the length offhand.

Plus I have a hand-forged Mainz belonging to an former member of ours, and the (rather skinny) wooden grip I made for that is 3-1/2" long.

The first three at least are shown on the Legio XX Gladius page,
I have an old Deepeeka Pompeii Gladius, it's about 19" long, with a flat "disk" pommell...handle length, 4" long, a bit too long for my own hand, but it's workable (it's only really a show piece, not something I 'practice' with)
The grip is the original "bone" grip with a well-weathered/smooth "hexagonal" grip. I may replace the pommell and grip in the future, but I'm also thinking of Albion's Fulham gladius...but the high price is making me appreciate the sword I have at the moment ;D
-ANDY aka "Roman Dude" Svaviter in Modo, Fortiter in Re
Thanks very much for the responses.
I’ve been wondering about this as part of a larger question for a few weeks now. My own sword is a Deepeeka Pompeii my wife gave me for Christmas one year. I’m not a re-enactor myself, but had some free time so I decided to rebuild the sword furniture. I carved a new guard and pommel, put in a new brass plate, modified the pommel nut, that kind of thing. But the handle looked acceptable, accurately carved bone, so I left it. But recently, after looking over some depictions of the gladius in Roman art, I did some reading on surviving examples of the gladius handle and discovered that the handle provided by Deepeeka is too long, about 10.1 cm.

The only survey of surviving gladius grips I know of is part of a very short aticle by Stephen Greep, published in a supplement of Arma (1989 reprint). The article isn’t highly detailed, but Greep’s conclusions tend to suggest to me that few if any modern gladius reproductions use the same type of bone the Romans did (I have to wonder if using cow bone is standard for Deepeeka artisans), and most are probably too long.

Why this is important (assuming I’m reading the evidence correctly) is a topic I think I’ll open on a separate thread.
