Rado.
Gaius Plinius Secundus is more commonly known as Pliny the Elder, he was commander of the Roman Fleet at Misenum on the bay of Naples and he died trying to save friends when Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, he had earlier been a Cavalry commander in Germania and this phalera was found at Xanten in Germany, it is dated to 50 AD and the inscription reads PLINIO PRAEF(ECTO) EQ(UITUM) but written in brief as PLINIO PRAEF EQ behind the head of the Emperor who would have been Claudius.

Here is a picture of the Phalera that shows the insciption around the head of Claudius, in fact if you look close it does not touch any of the decoration but the letters are placed inbetween the leaves and grapes.

There is a very good account of the Elder Pliny by our own Jona Lendering, if you check out ancient WARFARE magazine you should find more details ( a very good article indeed )

I have renewed my author's project work "Reconstruction of Roman cavalry harness trappings equipment Claudian period from British Museum” as you can see from the picture there are 4 phalerae discs of different sizes. What are the authentic sizes to which I should stick with?
Thanks in advance for guidance in topic. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The horsegear you show there is of the Flavian era, not Claudian, though.

Thank you for your note Jurjen
This is the description from the British museum: "..Date 50 (circa) Associated names Named in inscription Pliny the Elder ? Named in inscription Nero ? Named in inscription Claudius I ?.." There is no mention of Flavia dynasty!?

Hello Rado
I only have one pic of these, though i do believe that you have seen other pics on a friends Facebook page and i think it would be inapropriate to put up a link to his album without his consent. Hope you all enjoy this pic, i will try to get some more soon. Kevin

Quote:Hello RadoI am familiar with this masterful work Kevin. Me and my brother we are also working on a similar quality "glass project". But maybe there will be some development on it after a month or two. Currently working on a horse harness. |
