Comitatus Events 2008
#1
It's raining in York, and snowing on the hills to the west. So it must be the time to do a public event.

Comitatus public events start tomorrow, and details of further events can be viewed on the events pages of www.comitatus.net

I sympathise with all those others out this weekend. For some reason it seems OK, fun even, to get wet and cold over the winter riding or at a training weekend. But at a public show the weather somehow seems more important.

Good luck all.

It was a very different kind of weekend. A sort of pre-seaon get together with a very challenging dateline. It was fun putting together new equipment, especially new bone buckles for the 500AD dateline.

I liked the solid buildings to play in. I liked the encampment. I liked teaching the soft soppy English public about Cornish tin and 6th century trading. I really liked my new leather covered buckler and our new pattern welded spathas. Making new javelin heads, knives and axes in the forge was a treat. I can't physically fit any more veruta in my quiver. Wearing punched/riveted mail was a change from scale. And mead benches are good invention.

But I missed helmets and big shields. I missed early morning drill in Latin. I missed orderly camping. I missed hourly shows. I missed coptic tunics. I missed artillery. I missed gold and silver. I missed the smell of saddles and the acid smell of horse urine. I missed organisation.

Rockingham will be harmless Roman fun. Lincoln will be excellent, with the annual pay parade and swearing in. I can't wait!
