Roman Eagle - Sulla - 03-29-2006 Hi guys/gals I am working on an illustration that has a large roman eagle statue in the background and I was wondering if any one knows of good examples of Roman eagles I can look at for imperation? Re: Roman Eagle - tlclark - 03-29-2006 Which period? I have some. Here's one of the eagles above the apotheosis of Antoninus Pius and Faustina from his column base. I also have an image from Titus' apotheosis from the Arch of Titus. Travis Re: Roman Eagle - Sulla - 03-29-2006 Say first century but its not an exact historical piece. So maybe pick what you have that looks the most artisticaly interesting Re: Roman Eagle - Titus Martius - 03-29-2006 1st century: http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e310/ ... ftitus.jpg http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e310/ ... 6068_2.jpg 3rd century mosaic: http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e310/ ... aicSUP.jpg unknown: http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e310/ ... si63f4.jpg Re: Roman Eagle - Uwe Bahr - 03-30-2006 somewhat archaic oil lamp in the form of an eagle - found at the Augustaean Roman stronghold Haltern: [url:3n9ijw2m]http://www.livius.org/a/germany/haltern/haltern_lamp.JPG[/url] Re: Roman Eagle - Sulla - 04-01-2006 Thanks for the images. This one http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e310/ ... si63f4.jpg is the closest to what I am looking for. Re: Roman Eagle - Theodosius the Great - 04-02-2006 Re: Roman Eagle - Sulla - 04-02-2006 Thanks that one is interesting. Roman Eagle - Primitivus - 04-18-2006 Theodosius, Do you know the milieu of the eagle image you posted? It's quite impressive. Just the sort that inspired many of America's colonial artists... Re: Roman Eagle - Jona Lendering - 04-18-2006 Quote:unknown:It was part of the entrance of the Forum of Trajan, which was in the northwest. (Earlier reconstructions show a temple on this site, but it is now certain that the temple was in the southeast; the northwest was the monumental entrance.) The eagle itself is in the narthex of the Sant' Apostoli church. It has often been reproduced, for example on monuments of the Italian monarchy and the fascists (e.g., on the lamp standards along the Via dei Fori Imperiali). As heraldic emblem, it is now replaced by the star. Re: Roman Eagle - Theodosius the Great - 04-18-2006 Quote:Theodosius, Hi Primitivus, I found it on this page but it doesn't mention its place of origin. BTW, it says the Greeks used the eagle as a symbol for Zeus... Re: Roman Eagle - Primitivus - 04-18-2006 Quote:Hi Primitivus,Thanks. It's interesting. They have some nice replicas for sale. Doesn't say whether they are direct copies or are inspired by ancient artwork. (I'm assuming, from the detail that they are the former.) Re: Roman Eagle - Crispvs - 05-17-2006 I think at least some of them are probably inspired by ancient works of art. The 'Weary Heracles Plaque' looks to me to bear more than a passing resemblance to the Herakles Farness statue. Crispvs |
