odd instrument - richsc - 07-10-2003 Over in RAT there is this photo of an odd instrument; any guesses on it? It looks like it has a long key for changing the sound, but being down at the bell it would not make much change at all. The mouthpiece looks like it would accomodate an internal single/double reed, something like a bagpipe?

Note also the one hand support. It looks like it has a head strap like an aulos.

Edited by: Richsc at: 7/10/03 3:14 pm
Re: odd instrument - richsc - 07-10-2003 Got the following from Susanna Ruhling of Musica-Romana

'Maybe that is a "salpinx" , the Greek version of a Roman "tuba", made out of bronze or copper and not blown as a trompet, but instead with a reed, like a bagpipe.
That would explain the think face of the blower and the think blowing end...a tuba would be smaller.'

I think the long key is connected to a mute: the variations in sound would be entertaining, and can sound like a wide variety of human sound. Think Harpo Marx in Duck Soup, having a telephone conversation just with his horn.

|
