Santa Maggiore Mosaic - Flavivs Aetivs - 02-18-2014

I have no clue, some religious debate.

The Thread title is my fault actually, being the one that moved it. I fixed it so all new posts will have the correct spelling.

Santa Magiorre Mosaic - Diocle - 02-18-2014

Quote:I apologize to all Italians for misplacing two letters in the name of that church-please have mercy with my poor soul Idea

Well you can believe me there are also words in my own native language where one misplaced letter can completely change resulting meaning of that word :-)

P.S.- love you too Carlo Wink

First of all, you are innocent as a pure spirit or like an angel Pavel, actually the dark soul confessed his sin: He's Evan, who was hidden in the darkness, plotting against the Latin Language as always! :x

Second: For these reasons I'm the one who have to ask your mercy Pavel! ... and I'll take my revenge on Evan who is the real perpetrator of the crime!

Anyway in this case the misplacement didn't change the meaning of the adjective, it only sounded a little strange! Confusedilly:

Ah - isn't mutual love a wonderful thing? But now, back to the matter at hand please gentlemen, which I recall being about helmets.

Santa Maggiore Mosaic - Diocle - 02-19-2014

Do you mean the Attic helmets clearly depicted in the mosaic?
You're right! Sorry.

Santa Maggiore Mosaic - AMELIANVS - 02-19-2014

No those are Intercisa type helmets  !

Santa Maggiore Mosaic - Flavivs Aetivs - 02-19-2014

Again, it's a classicization of a piece of modern military gear. They probably saw Intercisa helmets, and with "inspiration" (be that Cheech and Chong's kind or from a statue in Rome) put browguards on it and exaggerated the edging (IMO, some may have had brass edging like on earlier helmets, and by exaggerating that, it would account for the flair they give to make it look more like a kettle hat).

Here ridge helmets in a mosaic from the Villa Romana del Tellaro. Complete with a feather crest like the famous one on the Constantius coin.

The wearer of the peacock crested helmet in the mosaic is a king, Priam or Agamemnon?, this would accord with the later Byzantine use of the toupha. This was a helmet-crown with a peacock feather crest worn by emperors as triumphant generals. It is shown on a 10th century textile, being presented to a victorious Byzantine emperor (possibly John I Tzimiskes).

Santa Maggiore Mosaic - AMELIANVS - 02-21-2014

Thanks for this mosaic Markus Aurelius Montanvs.I got it somwhere on my old computer and I cant find it again on the internet as I fogot place of this mosaic. Those guys are Odysseus,Achilles(having that peacock crest i think),king Priam and some other(less famous guy never played by any Hollywood star  )

Toupha triumphal crown is known from other sources as well. For example Collosal statue of Justinian which once standed in front of Hagia Sophia being biggest from all victory collumns ever made by the Romans also hade toupha very prominently included.

Villa Romana del Tellaro is strikingly similar in style of execution as well as fashion it shows so we can be almost certain it is from the very same time as those from Piazza Armerina.

Some other nice shoots from it(all can be find in much better resolution on the internet):

Santa Maggiore Mosaic - Flavivs Aetivs - 02-21-2014

Ooh! Is that a Semispatha?

Santa Maggiore Mosaic - AMELIANVS - 02-21-2014

I cannot confirm it.And from what I know we don't even know for sure what semispatha exactly was.

Santa Maggiore Mosaic - Flavivs Aetivs - 02-21-2014

If I am correct a few have been found. I have some pictures in Mik's. Replik makes one (well, one of the three "Replik" websites.)

Santa Maggiore Mosaic - AMELIANVS - 02-21-2014

But can we be sure those are what Romans called semispatha?

Santa Maggiore Mosaic - Flavivs Aetivs - 02-21-2014

No, we can only guess.
