I went to Christies in South Ken to-day to see the stuff- great to see it not behind glass but almost touchable. I had to restrain myself from trying out the hoplite shield...
Highlights for me - the Pompeii gladius- with the reconstruction fully tinned (unlike most repro s bar Matthew Amt's) and with an ivory handle, and the astonishing helmets.
The range of sizes was astonishing- from a modern child's size to a large adult. Also striking was the lack of symmetry- even on the Niederdormter the brass head- visor" was skew, as was the hoplite helmet. The crudity of the punched signatures was also notable (eg on the gladius).Lots of amazing stuff, close up and personal...go see! Last viewing tomorrow.
Cheers
