Yeah I need to convert it over from video to DVD. I do have photos of us at our last war back in 93. (Sea Raids) We did try to be as accurate to the Romans as we could, and still be legal for SCA combat.
Hibernicus is right on all accounts, and he did bring back some memories that I forgot. We never ran towards our enemy, we marched up to them, and about 10 feet out we would throw our pilum at them. At that we would charge them. Complete chaos on their part. I watched SCA Knights run from us before we would engage.
One thing we did do at a field battle is we placed ourselves at a corner so that no one could flank us, and that forced them to take us on from the front. The Marshall's had to call hold a number of times to allow the dead in front of us leave.
Another thing that we did do was to allow the regular SCA groups to go out in front of us, and we would start to manuver where we needed to go using the SCA'ers as cover for us. This prevented the other kingdom from trying to save us for last. I forget the name of the Kingdom in South Carolina, but I'm from Trimaris here in Fla.

It would be of immeasureable help if you guys had some drill captured on DVD or even on Utube... I'm an ex-reg forces soldier so drill is nothing new to me, but I do love seeing it executed.
If something is worth doing, it is worth doing in a BIG way :!:

PS - this weekend we got some significant work done on our ballista, shield press is over half done, and cutting hinges... OMG the hinges. I was seeing those yellow SOBs in my sleep

What a party!! A dozen Romans building and afterwards feasting over open fire. Life is good.

They are moving, but not nearly as fast as I would like...
its proving very hard to align people's timings and finances to really get things rolling.
If I had a ton of money, I would just buy about 20 sets of the best of everything and just say, c'mon boys, let's suit up and play!! :lol:

OK,
I have decided on using hidden splinted armour for upper arms and legs...
I am considering Greek-like greaves with a twist... the upper knee part extends around to cover to 4 points and articulates off of the upper portion of the muscled greave.
Now onto forearms... thinking of matching bauzaband-like creatures. Going to make the lower leather insertions of the splinted armour tie into them... of course the gorget gets hidden by the Focale.
What about gauntlets? demi-gaunts maybe?
What say you veterans of the list?

Forearms and Thighs... Really doesn't matter so long as its hidden'
Shin/ Knee We use a plastic ice hockey shin/knee under long pants and attach a small disc to the outside of the hockey knee to meet minmums for knee protection... all hidden of course... That way you can wear an historic occrea without having to tweek it to meet SCA minimums.
Some guys wear ice hockey arms with elbow attached.. light weight!
Used gear by the way... ought to be lots of that in Canada!!
Gauntlets... take a gander at hand protection for Gladiators and pugilists.. You ouhgt to be able to come up with a leather cover/ mitten for gauntlets.

What are some of the Roman celebration / notable dates (Especially during the summer)

Upper legs are a few layers of heavy fabric, which gets hidden by the tunic.

notice the piece sticking up in the center top - what's left of the hinge that attached the knee piece. I hate to show this, but here's a place trying to pawn off really poor replicas
There's a much better reconstruction done by Robinson, also pictured in Dixon & Southern's "The Roman Cavalry". I just thought that one might give you an idea of how the parts go together. Unfotunately, the few sources I've seen on these, state that the hinged knee greaves were cavalry only, and won't go with seggy.
I've also thought of something doing something like a bazuband type piece for greave & knee, styled like a centurion's that comes up covering the knee, then adding something like hardened leather to the inside protruding out for the SCA safety's wings.

For hand protection... it just occured to me that some gauntlets (clamshell) are not unlike the look of a manica... I think I can work with that to continue the look of the segmentation.... hmmm.
I'll post a picture of the greaves when I have the prototype a little more finished.

The greaves won't have all that repousse' ( as I have not really mastered that yet) but will be muscled like their greek counterparts. The top will be articulated not unlike the typical poleyn but will be matched in proportion and detail to the main section... and the upper knee wings will be extended and wrap around sufficiently to protect the 4 points.
Again, I will post my images when prototype is completed.

I had no delusions of thinking that you'd try all that decorative work (after all, my luck I'd have to kneel on gravel or a slab of concrete, first time I wore the things). Except maybe to enter in A&S.

It is based on Greek Knemedies, only sports an articulated knee portion that offers protection to the 4 points.
