Got a little annoyed seeing the Authurian "armor"...Looks like a mash between Lor. Seg seen on Tajan's column and the skirt from a Rohirrim soldier from Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies.<br>

Altho, one must admit it's a little more interesting compared to the horrible Sean Connery Authur movie...forget the title...You probably know what I mean.<br>

Even if the people making Troy used say, Linothorax and Bell cuirasses....at least THAT would be better than that horrible, disgusting "Xena" type "armor". I mean, it just LOOKS dumb.<br>

The movie was "First Knight", and their armor was blue shirts with greyish, rectangular wine gums attached to the front. These are good for stopping arrows, and as an emergency ration.<br>

I think regardless of the armor accuracy of "Troy", that if it's a good movie, then that's fine. Hollywood should <strong>never</strong> be considered a source for authenticity. That's what books and documentaries are for. Hollywood is strictly for <em>entertainment</em>. It's a medium to tell a story. And as we all know here, stories get exagerated with their telling.<br>

I think the premise of Hollywood's role often gets looked over by those that happen to be well versed in a particular subject. But again, it doesn't matter...if you are willing to spend the money, all that movie has to do is take you away from reality for a while, and show you a good time. No sense banging your head for something that isn't going to happen. It's not hollywood's job to educate. <p>Magnus/Matt<br>

well, we know that Hollywood should never be considered a source for authenticity. But i´m afraid that a lot of people don´t knwo that. Since Gladiator i know a lot of people who are also "experts" in Roman history and get their info from Hollywood. Futhermore, here on RAT we´ve had some people saying "in the movie Gladiator i saw ....., is that true?"<br>

I'm still of the opinion he should not have done Arthur in First Knight (which, btw, was yet another missed opportunity to do something realistic Arthurian movie), but Merlin. He was too old for the part, Arthur married Guinevere in all versions of the legend at an early age, not as an old geezer.<br>

If I could put in my two sesterces, I think the memory of the film is likely to be "Duel of the Titans" (1961) starring Steve Reeves and Gordon Scott. While the basic plot is the legend of Romulus and Remus from Livy, Steve Reeves does a bridge defence ala "One-eyed" Horatius before the plowing the pomerium and killing Remus (Scott) in the final scene. True, it's an interpolation, but I remember it was very exciting decades ago. The other possibility might be "Amazons of Rome" (1962) starring Louis Jourdan, which depicts Lars Porsenna's attack on Rome, though I don't recall seeing this one, or what Amazons have to do with anything.<br>
For anyone looking for a good general resource (the depictions of antiquity in the media are a growing sub-discipline in academia) I recommend Jon Solomon's "The Ancient World in the Cinema" updated 2nd ed. Yale, 2001. It's recent enough to cover Gladiator and has indexes and filmographies that make searching IMdb.com a lot more fruitful (alternative titles, foreign titles, etc.).<br>
I have tried to find a VHS or DVD of the "Duel" and have not been able to. Maybe if folks like us could let the media moguls know there is a market for old sword and sandal flicks. (P.S. Sergio Leone wrote the script and assistant directed this Tarzan vs. Hercules extravaganza, reportedly shot in the Sabine hills not far from the actual legendary landscape and then went on to direct "The Colossus of Rhodes," one of the better genre pieces, before moving to the Amercian West and "A Fistful of Dollars.")<br>

Hello! the Tiger tanks used in "Saving Private Ryan" where built using russian T-34 tanks of WW2 fame.Those same vehicles where 1st used in "kellys heros". Only the first half hour of Private Ryan was historically accurate and realistic.The rest of the movie was complete Hollywood B.S.<br>

Theirs no way you can stick your gun into the Tigers Drivers port and shoot the driver.And the Tigers cannon rounds in the movie make about as much damage as a hand grenade going off.LOL what insanity.<br>

The best Sword and Sandel movie is still by far John Milius' "Conan the Barbarian".That movie is fantastic in all ways.<br>

Gladiator was both a takeoff of "Conan" and "Fall of the Roman Empire",with a few elements of "Braveheart thrown in the mix.I did not care for this movie that much at all.<br>
