I use 0.015" brass to stamp my plates, and they hold up fine. Smile

I have one plate to the right of my apron, and it seems ok, but there are a few buckles with a plate integral, so perhaps not too out of practice.

Re: Questions about the forging of a pugio and a balteus - M. Demetrius - 02-22-2008

Putting the buckle close to the right of the apron is a good idea, I think. That's the same placement and direction of a modern man's belt. That will allow the tongue end of the belt to go through the apron, and be kept more or less out of the way.

I like it! Thanks, guys. I'm using a Deepeeka buckle and stamped plates from Albion. The buckle/plate will have the leather end of the belt sandwiched between, as the picture. Should I make up a tip decoration for the tongue of the belt? I'm already building pugio frogs, so one more thing won't be a really big deal, I think.

This site: romanmilitaryequipment.co.uk/figures.htm is very use full, but the images are not very clear. I use this site to make the plates, but does anyone know a site were I can see it more clearly?

I also have more questions about the cingulum.

http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/4346/f ... ulooy1.png

1) How many parts indicated with number 1 did the Roman belt have at one piece of the leather strip? What was the thickness of it?

2) Did the Romans bend part 2 in the image so it touches the leather at 2 parts ( at the back and at the front)

3) What was the average thickness of this plate?

4) How many leather strips did the cingulum have and what was the total length and width of it?

I`m sorry I have a lot of questions. But I really like to make my own belt Big Grin . This week I have not go to school so I can make this. Because of this reason I ask a lot at one time.

Some depictions of the apron have up to 8 straps fitted with between five and over 20 studs! Have a look at the imagebase here on RA.com for examples.

Mike Bishop's article is a great place to start..

The strap end terminal you have labelled No. 2 is a cast bronze piece and about 2.5mm thick. It is a find made at Tekije. We sell the reconstructed parts..

Grr. wrong format. Try this:

That should do it.

Nice buckle Dave, you dood that?

It looks very similar to mine, maybe wider though.

Re: Questions about the forging of a pugio and a balteus - M. Demetrius - 02-22-2008

No, I bought it from LaWren's nest, and I'm 98% sure it's an old Deepeeka one. Couldn't find it right now on their list, so maybe it's discontinued. Looks nice, though, you're right, thanks!

It's 1 1/2" wide. Is that about 37mm?

Re: Questions about the forging of a pugio and a balteus - Gaius Julius Caesar - 02-22-2008

Well, thats the same as mine, 37 mm! So 1-1/2 inches is a little wider...38mm

Re: Questions about the forging of a pugio and a balteus - Latinitas - 02-22-2008

Thanks for the texst Smile . I only don`t know what straps, studs and terminals are. Maybe and very logic the straps are the leather strips and the studs are the metal circles fixed on the leather strips. I have no idea what a terminal is... Maybe the part indicated with number 2.

To make it more clearly, I have made a drawing. This is what I would like to know in question 2. It was difficult to formulate that question in good English. Which possibility is true?

Re: Questions about the forging of a pugio and a balteus - M. Demetrius - 02-22-2008

Could someone with photoshop ability take a photo of a balteus and label the parts? That would probably help folks...strap, plate, buckle, apron, terminal, apron "stud", belt strap terminal, that sort of thing.

I will issue a brand new laus point for the first one that gets an image up here!
