Salve,

I was wondering if someone could shed some light on a reasonable timeline for the different types of Roman armour... as in when it was introduced and when it faded from view. (Variants would be appreciated as well i.e. Segmentata: Newstead, Corbridge A/B, kalkreise etc...
Does not have to be bang on, even ballpark will suffice.

You are referring to the lorica segmentata/plate armour?
because scale armour and mail existed long before Rome and never faded from view afterwards.

However which came first, the Hamata or the Squamata?

I know Hamata was worn by pretty much everybody at different periods, but the Squamata seems to have been the dominion of Aqualifers, Centurions... or is this just modern re-enactmentism, or do we really know who would have worn the Squamata?

This is a modern thing. The squamata could be worn by all ranks. You can for exemple see common soldiers wearing a squamata on the adamklissi metopes:

Scale armor has been around since at least the 15th C BC. Mail is likely to have been invented by the Celts in the 5th C BC. Romans used both throughout the Roman period.

As far as I know, our RAT-member Martin Moser is part of this group, so maybe you've to suggest him to extend with an English version.

Even so, very informative... although it doesn't show the squamata till much later on. Perhaps the squamata is of Persian influence? In which case it would have been known as long as the maille. Does this sound reasonable?
