At the suggestion of Paullus Scipio I have started a new thread to discuss and share information about Scythian armour. To start the ball rolling I have posted some pictures of armour excavated between the 1980's to 1990's.
If you have photos that would greatly benefit readers of this thread please please post them here. I don't have too many armour items as that isn't my main focus so I would love to see what you have lurking on your machines :lol:

That shield is currently in a series of hot debates within Russian academia as there isnt enough evidence as yet to establish if they were carried like this all the time during combat (perhaps on horseback), if he was simply just buried like this or if this was the way the shield was carried when not in use. Ethnographic photos of Siberian tribes - I believe one is posted on this site somewhere - show that they were carried like this.
Its one of those things that would benefit from a reproduction to be made and then a spot of experimental archaeology with reenactors could find the answer.
At the moment the consensus is that the slot is for hand to hand combat, but again I would like to see some experiments carried out between a Scythian and some Hoplites to see if this would work

I think it's pretty clear that they were worn like that in combat, as we have the Solokha comb to provide us with about a clear an example as we could ever wish to get. The only mystery is, as you say, just how it was attached.

if it was the image I am thinking of in the links posted by igor, they looked pretty confusing for that to be certain in my mind. There looked like the one guy had at least three of these screen/shields around him.... :? shock:
one looked like it was strapped to his back as in the reconstruction, but then another was in front, and another just seems to be there.... :?

@ Marika, it would be an interesting project to recreate that suit, but I am already bogged down in the Roman era!
