Looks like all that would have to be done to make the older, non-interlocking type of squamata would be to move the side holes up so they are underneath the overlapping scale above. Not having a machine around here to stamp out whole plates, and not being likely to get one any time soon, this is an excellent way to accomplish the task.
How did you compute how many scales you'd need?
