Quote:f you didn't have to spend your own hard-earned cash, would you travel from wherever you are, and take the time, to take part in recreations of the above for a week in Germany?

If everything was covered... most definitely. With work, home, kid, wife, etc... if I had to pay my way (and theirs) I probably wouldn't be able to do it. I only get two vacations a year and vote them a year in advance. So I voted "I'd like to" in the poll.

I, too, hope everyone has a great time and I hope to see lots of pictures, video, etc. posted up here. If they had been willing to include US Romans, then I would likely have "moved heaven and earth" to get there. So, I put my energy and money into Lafe 9 AD and I am going to New Ulm, Minnesota for their official observance and reenactment in September. Of course, I still hope to get to Germany - maybe in another year or two - there is so much I want to see in Germany!

Looks like a good turnout. A bit wet though.

@ Ceasar
Yeah it was really wet, especially on Thursday and Friday. The Rainstorm on Thursdayevening, which last only 20minutes, set the whole place under water (and our Campfire and nearly all of our Steaks and sausages ......). We called it Varuswetter (Varian Weather).

@ Marcus Mummnius
I believe that i used during the last fight one of your groups scutas, because i must marched in whitout my own shield (i was a member of Legio XI CPF from Switzerland) to play a demoralized roman....... It was a light blue oval republican scutum, and i used it really good to defend the civillians, for 30 seconds or a little more, against 4 Germanics. I "killed" one and "hurt" one and was then hit by a Lance in my groin :?

Yes Campfire….
We had a higher one, so the fire burns on, while fire pit was like a swimming pool.
After digging a ditch to release the water out of the fire pit, we had an hand warm water lake…
But overall it was a great event!

We have a ditch around our tent and after the rainstorm, the ditch was nearly filled to the upper edge with water. If the rainstorm lasted only 2 or 3 minutes longer, we could go swim in our tent Big Grin

Before the Rainstorm, we fought a battle for some german and italian TV-Companys (i believe it was Rai-2 and the NDR). As we stand in Front of the Wall and prepared to attack the (heavily defended) Gate, it starts to rain! It was a strange feeling as the water dripped from your helmets and ran under your armor, make your shields wet and changed the soil to dark, viscid mud, meanwhile the Germans screams there warcrys!

On Wednesday evening a friend asked, did you believe here was a swamp?

Some hours later we had the evidence…

May Girlfriend paint a sign “Beware of Oger- Get out of our swamp”, sure this was not authentic…

The shield Marcus describes is the republican Gemina scutum. I found it to provide the best cover against the neverending hail of Germanic javelins!
Your fate was similar to mine; I engaged four tribesman by battering into the bunch, knocking over the first, throwing no. 2 off balance and thrusting both with the gladius. I managed to get no.3 down but the 4th got me in the back as I thrusted the 3rd. Good fun and the Germanics were very sportsmanlike.

The javelins were hurled continuously so the obvious choice was to pick them up and return to sender. Beïng lightweight I managed to throw them wel over 25 meters into the the ranks of the Germanics at the rampart. You can see me doing this at a couple of pics, where I have a bunch of them in the right hand. Very entertaining and truely bringing out the child in us.

Toughest thing though was maintaining the line when under attack and after 'wounding' a tribesman; you simply have to finish them off by breaking ranks!
