Very nicely done, Matt. Thank you for posting the pics of them.
May I ask what type of armour you wear over them? How long you have worn it? and how well it is holding up? Thanks!

That's for my segmentata...it's not done so I haven't worn the entire thing yet. But I have worn just the subarmalis under the armour, and it's held up since about 2001 with only a few stains and dark marks.

We tried to find out, but evidently nobody knows...that is to say, we're all ignorant of that fact.

Sorry about the pics gone missing -- but the limit on picture storage means that many times I have to delete pics from old threads in order to post pics of my newer items.
Here is a pic of my leather subarmalis, as well as the pattern.

Edge,
That's perfectly understandable. Just thought I was having a "bonehead" moment or something, hehe. Thanks for reposting the pics. That is quite nice work.

Not a problem, Brother. I wish I had more space to post pics, but understand that storage space is an issue.

Hi Edge,

you could just simply create a photobucket (or something similar, flickr, e.g.) account and link the pics from there, like many, including myself, do.

You are right, Martin, I tried that but I cannot access any of these data storage sites from my office due to security restrictions, and since I do most of my posts from there I have not had success with that route.
This is especially bad when I am browsing RAT and want to look at some of the great pics that have been posted that way.

This whole thread is fraught with assumption; it's simply accepted that LEATHER was used for a subarmalis.
Yes, I know that so many of you use leather.... But have you also used other materials? What about a FELT subarmalis?? Or simple wool??

This leather subarmalis of Legio VIII is I think pretty slick: goes back some years (1998?) on a RAT thread:

I found that with a leather sub (the one in Martin's photo) that I just got too damn hot in it! The material doesn't allow the body to breathe or wick-out any perspiration at all, like a padded linen or felted wool sub would.
My next one will be linen or wool with leather pteruges

Yes, Jim. I agree. But when I started this thread last year, I think I state explicitly:
"This thread is NOT intended to open a debate on the relative merits of one material or another -- when it comes to the subarmalis, opinions are like posterior orifices -- everybody has one. "
I also have a couple of quilted linen/wool subarmalis for our loaner kits, and they seem to work very well. Several of our Legio XI guys have worn them, and they are fine.
@Peronis -- my leather one is not uncomfortable. Maybe it breathes a little better because it is pigskin?

Ah. Slapped my own wrist.
The point about using pigskin is interesting.
