List of known helmets and their whereabouts
#1
Ave omnes!

Let’s start a list of all known Roman helmets (and fragments).

For an easy overview, I suggest the ‘continental’ classification system to group the originals. Robinson’s system and ‘detailed’ continental classification may be added to the special item.

The list should contain the basic information to identify the special items like finding location, material, owner and published data/photographs. And off course a link to their actual or last known whereabouts.

Most publications were printed long ago. So in the meantime museums and collections changed – by name, place or property. Some local museums merged, some collections are sold, therefore whereabouts and ownership might differ, too.

So everybody feel free to add or update items, information, sources or photographs, facts, translation, detect scribal errors and comment classification (especially add the Robinson- system)!

This first posting will be edited with the discussion, so you’ll find the actual list always on top of this topic.

Total listed items: 117 (and much still missing).

Just one edition; it's not 'Late Roman Guard helmets' (you probably got that by translating Klumbach's 'Spätrömische Gardehelme', didnt you? Big Grin ).
It should be 'Late Roman ridge helmets'.

Ave omnes,

Thanks – I’m only curious, how much items survived (I’ll needed a strong coffee indeed, not to fall asleep while typing this ‘exiting’ inventory numbers).

Perhaps we’ll achieve a list containing 90% of all originals, to feed the database with further information and self-made photographs.

Now I’m waiting for a sample of Robinson’s work to add a few more. Götz Waurick featured a lot of helmets in ‘Antike Helme’, but mostly refers to Robinson for details.

You're totally right Big Grin . I've corrected that now. There might be some other self-made translation errors (until I'll receive a Robinson), so any hint is helpful.

Hi Hilary
Yes please! I'm sure Dr Mike (Thomas), the main editor for the helmet db, would like it too. The list can be sent to Jasper and Drmike, both AT romanarmy.com.
Greets!

Did I overlook this in your list, or should it be included?

Nope. Not in the list. If you have hi-res photos, I'd love to put that helmet in the database too! (my apologies if you already sent them).
Greets!

Ave Hilary,

yes, I would be glad to have your list! It will save a lot of time. (I just have data about another 60-80 helmets but not much time to complete the list in the moment. But even with all my sources I won't reach your vast number of 272 ! Wow, incredible!

Laudes and PM including my e-mail address is on its way Big Grin

Ave Paul,

thanks for the information! Big Grin The list just is a kind of building site but will be completed step by step.

Every hint is useful and with Hilary's 272-helmet-list the project will soon be pushed forward. Big Grin
