I am sorry to have to tell you that founder member, Bill Mayes, has died. He was 84 and had been ill for about 3 years. The Guard owes a very great debt of gratitude to Bill. His wise counsels, enthusiasm and painstaking practical skills were invaluable, both when the Society started and during its subsequent 33 years. The fact that we are the foremost Roman re-enactment society in the world today, owes much to Bill's quiet and dedicated work behind the scenes.

His background was in technical writing so he was able to design and draw plans for all the original equipment of the Ermine St Ghosts. Indeed he made the very first plastic helmets. His skills were further used in the construction of the artillery where his abilities led to working machines straight from the design board with little or no modification.

The boots and caligae were his work too. All the miles the Guard has marched have been in footwear made and designed by Bill. Much later he took on board the tents and it was his skill which produced the designs . He did most of the sewing too.

Older members will know that he was Signifer, carrying the heavy standard and wearing the bearskin well into his seventies. He was then promoted to Senator, a position that seemed cut out for him with his natural dignity and gravitas.

We have lost a member whose skill and dedication has made the Guard what it is today. He will be sadly missed.

Bill's funeral will be at Cheltenham Crematorium on Thursday 11th August at 2.30 pm. Any Guard members wishing to attend might find it easier to come to the Farm first so we can fill up cars. Please let me know if you wish to do this and we can discuss timings.

Anyone wishing to send a card should send it to:
