Exhibition alert ???
#1
Some 15 moths ago we had that Imperium Romanum exhibition simultaneously at both Stuttgart (Early/Middle) and Karlsruhe (Late Roman). Must have been a smashing success because we now literally get smitten with similar shows.
1. "Die ersten Römer in Rheinhessen"/"The first Romans in Rheinhessen"

Open from Tuesday till Sunday, 10.00 to 17.00 GMT (MEZ)

Written guide by Dr. Mathilde Grünewald 2.50 €;
Accompanying book:Mathilde Grünewald/Erwin Hahn :Zwischen Varusschlacht und Völkerwanderung--Die römerzeitlichen Gräberfunde aus Worms & Rheinhessen im Museum der Stadt Worms/ Between the Battle of Varus and The Great Migration-- Finds from Graves of Roman Times from Worms and Rheinhessen as exhibited in the Municipal Museum of Worms";Kunstverlag Josef Fink, Lindenberg im Allgäu; 2 Bände mit 744 Seiten und 2200 Abbildungen;/ 2 Parts, 744 Pages, 2200 Depictions; 49,90 € ; im Museum: 30,-€
Been there: wellmade, concise and interesting as is the book.
Great Job considering the financial support this museum has.
In the face of what you get for it, the entrance fee is a steal.
The usual "no prisoners taken" approach with the book, as complete as possible, especially when taking into account that the local upper archaeological authority could have been a bit more considerate -- to put it mildly. The books is no "popular stuff", it is about graves and comprehensively so. I think this could be the best "bang-for-the-buck" for geman-speaking Students of Archaeology as an introduction to roman graves.

2. "Attila und die Hunnen"/"Attila And The Huns"

Vastly entertaining. A nice little (compared to "Imperium Romanum")well made exhibition. ( And betters "Von Augustus bis Attila -- Leben am ungarischen Donaulimes"/ "From August To Attila -- Life on the hungarian
danube Limes" from 2001 under every aspect BY FAR !)
"Prodesse Et Delectare ?" -- I think : YES !
...and definitely something for the "helmet-mafia" : "Spangenhelms" galore! .
The book perfectly matches the exhibition's approach.
None too bad for the "youngbloods" that organized it.
This was fun und will cause a lot of kids to try and "carry the flame".

Ahhhmmmm, wow !! This exhibition surely has the magnitude and stature of "Imperium Romanum", being vastly better made than the Karlsruhe part of this very exhibition. Both the exhibition and the books reflect very well the standing that Dres. Demandt and Engeman both have amongst Archeologists wordwide. (And rightfully so !) Even better and more impressive than the exhibition at Speyer albeit through sheer magnitude.
You easily get a good impression of how "Imperial Presentation" was like in those times !!
