Statue of Caesar, Parazonium and boots
#16
I would say that the top is a full animal skin, with the head in front and a paw at each side. The ring seems to be lacing tied around the top. That would also explain the oval cut-outs. The skin is cut into several parts so that it folds over more easily. The cord is tied just below the start of the cut-outs.
I wonder however whether this is a real Roman shoe or even Roman armour. The cloak for instance is not a paludamentum. Could it not be that this is Caesar, depicted as Alexander?

I have the open-toed officer boots that Terry Nix makes. I ordered them without the metal lion's heads though. I tore off the faux fur and just added upper flaps instead.

Here
and here

Anyway...

Here's a cavalryman wearing similar boots from Travis' website. He has a great close up shot too.

I tried to make a molded image of a lion's head from leather myself.

Here are some drawings too :

This would be my suggestion too. But I think a complete pelt might be a bit too large to use on a boot... But I'd think the head and front paws would have been real animals, not fake...

I checked with my local leather dealer but he stocks no lion cubs...

Wow, those look indeed excellent. So you'd need really newborn animals. I wonder if I could paint up two of our cats to look like lion cubs

Well done Tarbicus !!
Reckon that photo hits the nail right on the head - and what convinces me is the fact that on the boots, the faces seem a little distorted, in fact just like the cubs in the photo !!
The ancients were not as squeamish about anything as we are, so nice soft baby lions/leopards/ tigers to decorate your boots would be just the thing !!

I've not found a source for good imitation lion cub skins. I guess the market must be fairly limited... I think such a thing would be extremely expensive. I guess one could contact a shelter for lion cubs to ask if you can buy some if they die...

Somehow cats always pop up in threads about experimental reconstruction projects. Helmet padding, boot lining... Is their no end to their uses?

For the record: I like animals very much

Jef,

Importing and-or owning such animal hides here in the US can possibly land you in jail. Thats why you don't see to many romans here in the states wearing lion skins with their impressions...
