May seem an odd question this, but I'll give it a go.
As I understand it from some time in the C3rdAD the Romans, for whatever reason, started to depict legionarii and (maybe) auxilia in either a "classical style" muscled corslet or in no armour at all.
Can anyone give a me a (rough) date at which this started and whether there was any difference between the auxilia shown and the legionarii.
I seem to recall there are some carvings on the arch of Constantine which have been interpreted in different ways but what about earlier?
Thanks in advance.
