Hi,

I am considering buying this book:

Eichberg, Michael: Scutum. Die Entwicklung einer italisch-etruskischen Schildform von den Anfängen bis zur Zeit Caesars.

Can anybody tell me if it is any good?

With kind regards,

Hello Martijn!

I have this book and never repent to bought this regarding the high price for a paperback.
It is scholarly written and still the best in-depth study of this topic.
It's main advantage is that it lists all sources for the (mostly representational) evidence - artwork, numismatic, written sources - from the 8th-1st C. BC.
It also treats the Celtic and Hellenistic Scutum types.

These are the main chapters:

I. Einleitung
II. Schriftliche Ãœberlieferung zum Scutum
III. Etymologie des Wortes Scutum
IV. Denkmäler
V. Typologie
VI. Entwicklung und Gebrauch des Scutums
VII. Das Scutum als Bestandteil der Bewaffnung
VIII. Die Ausbreitung des Scutum im Mittelmeerraum
IX. Zusammenfassung
X. Katalog und Anhang
XI. Tafelnachweise
XII. Karten und Beilage

The plates which show examples of the vast amount of the evidence are not so good in quality, but as they show mostly the better preserved - and so better known - works of art, you will easily find better pictures in other sources.
For a quick access to the sources and their bibliography it is highly useful.

I would recommend this book but you have to understand German well.

Hope this helps.
