The Spoils of Victory- the North in the shadow of the Roman
#1
"The Spoils of Victory(the North in the shadow of the Roman Empire) " with 450 pages of full colour of findings from the bogs of the
North (Nydam, Vimose etc) is well worth getting- and very attractively priced- mine (with a bulk order for RMRS of 8 cost just under £9 including postage.

Lots of good stuff from pre-Roman to late Roman- pugio, knives with preserved handles, lots of gladii and spathae (one stunner
from 3rd century has an ivory and silver hilt...) , lances (including decorated shafts ) arrow shafts, face masks , bows etc etc from the early to the Late Roman period. a beautiful second/ third century gilded Roman griffin that when found was "on a bar with a blue and red flag which dissolved when touched "(!) (poss also a helmet crest), a first century lady found with her clothing (including two fur capes), the preserved boats etc etc. Also some colour pics of the Nijmegen finds.

Published by the Nationalmuseet Denmark- really nice people. I called them, ordered over the phone, and the books were on my doorstep the following week.

Thanks to Celer for flagging this one.

Cheers

I'm definately looking forward to collecting my copy at the weekend Paul!

That lovely Germanic-pattern gladius locket is screaming out to be reconstructed!

Just opened the package which Martin Moser kindly sent to me! I nearly fainted; spathas, helmets, pugios, etc. in clear colour photographs supported with interesting articles & other artwork about the roman empires nordic dimension. Just makes me wonder how many other high quality books like this are gathering dust in some museums warehouse...

9pounds? Heck, that's a steal. Especially if it's as informative as you lot are making it up to be. Any chance it's available in English (Sounds like it's mostly pictures, but captions help explain the pictures, too)?

It is ALL english! Yes, it is mostly pictures supplemented with extensive articles like "germanic warrior, weaponry" etc. Sounds good, huh?!

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

They quoted me 30,40DKK (= £2.75 / $5.50) for the book and a staggering 224,00DKK (= £20.30 / $40.76) for "handling charges"!! Confusedhock:

Yes, something like that. the price was very low, the postal charge enormous compared to that. But it's a big heavy book, and it's absolutely marvellous, and I would not have been able to buy it at Amazon, so I'm not complaining!!!! Big Grin
