Funny...this thread is almost a year old...so when I saw the picture in the first post I thought..."gee, those look like sandals for teenage mutant ninja turtles". I scroll down and see I posted the very same thought.
That means either great minds think alike, or in a year I haven't grown up or matured. lol

So the second heel layer must end where the straps are tacked it?
Also, the nails don't appear to be bent over to hold in, have they pulled themselves out at all?

I have seen these type of sandals before and have often thought is the extention to allow protection to the toes, for hitting ones smaller toes against a pillar or corner can be very painfull particularly when just leaving the bath when they are soft and warm.
