Salvete.
I am wondering about the evolution (if any) of the decoration of the scabbards of the Mainz-type gladii. It is known how was the scabbard of the early types? There were some kind of trend through later times, or there was different random decorations (depending on the origin of the sword, etc)?

Slave,
Although I do not have the progression for you... I can provide the original examples below... hope that helps a bit.
The last three, including that famous "Sword of Tiberius" example are too large to post as an image... you'll have to click the links.

Gaivs the earliest scabbards seem mostly to have a frame with cross pieces from early 1st BC down to possible Caesar there is a reference to Caeser giving the X Legion decorated swords. Then came a explotion of decorated scabbards mostly pierced decoration on metal or leather, then embosed pieces either part or full length of the scabbard, it is really hard to tell which came first, it could have been down to the soldiers taste .

A very useful information Tony, thanks. So it seems to have been more or less a random pattern of decoration...
