Our group has a canvas tent from Panther, and since its so white it stands out at events. I have been considering painting it so it looks a little less out of place. I would like to hear some opinions if we should paint it or not.
If we paint it or not I would like to replace all of the ties with leather ones at least.

Stain it to look like its been in the field... used worn dirty... no brand spanking shiny new. I miss the reguklar canvas Panther used in the past.. it aged so nicely... I do not like sunforger
I have met a couple of painted to look like leather tents and they all look like painted canvas.

Paint it brown! Worked great for Lee's tent, which you saw at Roman Days. All kinds of folks thought it was leather. Legio III Gallica from New Orleans had a painted canvas tent years ago, too, and it also looked good.
I'm kind of curious--what's wrong with something looking new? Sometimes things WERE new, even back then!

Staining:
we're experimenting.
So far a black tea mix is working.. make a monster batch of sun tea place in a sprayer and apply to a standing tent. We have a roll of sunforger for making gers (yurts)
I think the trick will be several thin sprayings. Runs would not do!
We'll let everyone know it works, post pics etc.
Looking new? New sunfoger? Too glaring white! I don't like it. I like the fact that we can put up a camp of 15-20 tents (canvas).. but its canvas. We're going to replace them all but it'll take a few years.
We have three older tents of regular canvas and they have aged nicely.. greying, dull, that lived in look, the look of troops that have been on the road or in the field...
