Handicap Aids? A Cane
#1
This is kind of a strange request but I am looking for pictures of roman examples of walking canes. It appears that do to my health issues I will be needing one, possibly two canes in the near future and would like to make a couple of reproductions beforehand. Thanks.

Hi Juan,

I couldn't see many examples of Roman walking aids, but there are gravestones depicting centurions holding staffs, such as the one of Marcus Favonius. Maybe you could improvise.Smile

These T-shaped staffs can be made fairly simply, the upright continuing into the handle as a mortice and tenon joint (I would glue for strength), either cain (hip)-length or chest height.

I'm only familiar with them as badges of rank and singly, but I would have thought a variety of direct solutions would have been pursued. I have had to rely on spears for support and shield to perch on, on more than one occasion.

My reproduction has no ferrule.

Here's a very similar piece:

Good luck with the project and, indeed, with your health.

Thanks for the pictures and to every one else also for the ideas. I've got about a year of surgeries ahead and a cane is going to be my constant companion.

I remember when we were up on the gatehouse filming the Ballista scene, John was worrying about leaving the helmet on the parapet incase it fell, mind you, I would be too for the price it must have cost for a helmet like that Smile
