Ave, Dan et al

I had the good fortune to visit Tunis last summer and spent a fair a mount of time poking around in the Carthage sites that were on the tour route. I think you are right on target if you use the TANIT representation on your shield. It is everywhere ! AFAIK she was never depicted anthropomorphically , but only as an abstract composed of circle, llnes and triangle. The crescent was also her symbol.

This may have been made up for the tourists but our guide stated that the Tanit symbol was also used as components , with each symbol representing an attribute of the goddess. Circle as knowledge and wisdom , lines (arms) as power and mercy? and the triangle as motherhood , fertility, love etc. and pointed out several areas that had circles etc.

Sounds like you are on your way to a unique impression !

Hmmm, interesting...

I would be interested in such information too. Was there any difference between the Phoenicians (Tyrus and other Phoenician cities) and the Carthaginians??

Thanks!

Wow... totally forgot about this thread! Just thought you might be interested to hear that Duncan Head is set to publish a new Osprey-style book on the Carthaginian army in the next couple of years. Should be another essential work, much like AMPW.
Ruben

He had with him the selfsame rifle you see with him now, all mounted in german silver and the name that he\'d give it set with silver wire under the checkpiece in latin: Et In Arcadia Ego. Common enough for a man to name his gun. His is the first and only ever I seen with an inscription from the classics. - Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian

The Temple of Solomon was built by the king of Tyre. The cherubins at the foot of the throne are actually Phoenician iconography. Solomon also built a second Temple to the goddess Ishtar/Isis.
