Metal Applique on scuta... any proof of it?
#1
So, I ask this. IS there any proof of Imperial Roman scuta with some of the items done in metal (lightning bolts, etc.)?? I had thought I had read that there was some proof of this... What are your thoughts on this?

I prefer painting. Wear your scutum some km/miles and you will refuse every unnecessary weights  .

Quote:There is some evidence to suggest that the emblems of the 1st century shields were thin metal appliques. Several fragments of lightning bolt insignia have been found at Kalkriese, complete with nail holes, and the best guess is that they were shield devices. An intact, probable auxilliary shield from Doncaster has a very large decorative sheet of cupric alloy metal on its face, and a number of other finds of the period can be interpreted as metallic shield decorations.

Thanks Tarby, the helpful gentleman, as always :-) ) Reading over that thread, it does seem there is some basis for this. Is there any for it later in the century?

I ask all this as Hibernicus and I were discussing this and he believes it to be not. Yeah, I was toying w/ the notion of adding metal ornamentation to my scutum. :-Þ Hibernicus feeling is that this would be (spit! he said) wrong! So, I am out checking first.

:?: Well they could have come from a shield, but how certain can we be? Are there any fragments of wood or leather adhering to the metal?

Apparently there are some nails left, which were attached to wood. See left piece, right lower end. And they are not engraved, it´s a brakteat.

I sure wish people would put scales in photos- is there any indication of what the size of these pieces is? That would certainly help...
