Taormina
Theatre

Syracuse
museum, amphitheater, theater, temple = Duomo, Euryaleus fort, Blessed Virgin of the Tears (opposite museum)
(first read Thucydides, or -even better- Donald Kagan)

Piazza Armerina

Gela
city wall, museum

Licata (= Cape Ecnomus)
especially for the beach where Gen.Patton landed in '43

Agrigento
Temples, city, museum

Selinus
many temples, city

Marsala
Museum (has a Phoenician Warship!) + Motya!!!!

Segesta
Temple + city

Palermo
Archaeological Museum; Monreale, Capella Palatina. Most beautyful city of Italy*

Cefalu
Cathedral

*
Of course, Florence and Venice are more beautiful, but -let's face it- they are no cities. As a city, Florence has no heart (has been thrown to the tourists); and Venice is of course just the historical suburb of Mestre.

BTW, you live in the UK. Do not forget the Commonwealth Cemetery near Catania Airport, for those fallen in Monty's campaign to Messina. The landing zone at Augusta offers no special sights, but if you go to Taormina, you can see the rocks where the British fought their way through Italian and German resistance.
