Tin Plating a Helmet
#1
I am considering plating my new Coolus I recently built. Has anyone done this? Any suggestions?

Hibernicus could tell you how to do it. We are tinning our segs and other bits as we speak. (New IXth standards)

I am sure he could give some tips on your helmet.

Paul, there must be something on your side of the Pond with the same properties. It's basically solder paste (specified to 100% tin) with the flux combined. I think the flux is pretty aggressive.

There is, Jim.

I have used it before to tin a balteus. I have no idea how it would work on a helmet. The method that works for me for balteus parts is to put them in a 450 degree F oven for about 2 and a half minutes and then wipe quickly.

I just contacted a place local to me that does plating. They told me on the phone they could tin plate and even silver plate. So I have an email to them with pics to get a quote.

If you get hold of any Nealetin paste put it in a well labelled glass jar. It's great stuff, but the flux is so strong that mine ate through it's plastic container!!! :? Expensive.

Showing off a bit, but I've got a Len Morgan Gallic G which has been silver plated and it's LURVELY

You can have a pro do it for you but you end up with a perfect job.

yup, Oateys #95. .. get the 16oz bucket!

Or a heat source and a stick of tin.... heat the helmet on the inside and rub the stick of tin on the outside.

Or hot dip the helmet in a bucket of molten tin... now that's FUN!

I suppose you could get a home tin plating kit.
