In the new book by D'Amato and Sumner on page 42 there's a photo of a bronze musculata where the caption says it's been dated from the 1st to 3rd centuries AD. Until I bought the book I had read that no example of a musculata survived in any Roman context. The closest example was one of Samnite origin, IIRC.
Has anyone else seen the photo of this Roman musculata ?
I'd like to know how confident others are about the dating of this artifact.
It's in remarkably good shape though not quite as well as the Samnite example.
The locking mechanism is much simpler than the older Samnite and Greek examples, according to the author.
