Wind in Greece
#1
A very strange question, perhaps: which wind direction is, in Greece, generally associated with storm and -especially- rain?

I am asking because I always thought that bad weather was associated with northeastern wind. However, in his description of the Flood, Ovid, is explicit that it was caused by a southern wind. Unless this is normal in Greece, it may be an echo from the Near Eastern texts.

Actually, thats true as far as I can tell. Rain cames with the southern wind. But the worst windstorms are normally northern.

It depends on the place. For example in my home town,Alexandroupolis, the sea is from the South and the town suffers with the Southern winds more.As Spyros said,Southern winds are more rainy while Northern ones are as much strong but frozen.I don't think I helped, rather confused things but I always thought every place suffers from different winds according to many different factors(mountains etc)

One of the big problems is that the ancients gave different names to the same winds.

The Islands and mountains create interesting mictoclimates.

Ask any contact that you have that cas done sailing in the Aegean and he will give you intersting details.

Mountains: Any army negotiating Central and Northern Greece mountain passes in August runs the risk of sudden snow falls in April.
My father experienced one such phenomenon in April 1949,
10% of his company were frostbitten!

If I recall correctly, similar events (during the Civil War) are mentioned by Dimitris Hatzis in The Double Book. (Hell, I lost my copy of the Dutch translation, and it has never been reprinted. Cry  It's one of the best novels I've ever read.)

Are you sure your SSP lies? Does it say Greece in general or one particular place?

Mind you, you will discover that a lot of the info. you get from supposedly reliable sources is, in fact, untrue. A compatriot of yours has published a book, "Lies my Teacher told Me" which demonstrates this - but don't blame your teachers, they are often working from material recommended to them as reliable. Many of us here may be harbouring beliefs and prejudices, despite recent evidence to the contrary, because we can't accept that a teacher/mentor/family member we respected/liked/loved actually handed us a bum steer, when we were younger. Such is life.
