Help with some Greek Gear
#1
Hello All

I have just taken intrest in building myself a set of Greek gear for use in the SCA- I know this is not a premium known society reenactmentwise, but I seek advise on how to proceed with my gear- to really give it a chance in looks, style, and correctness.
I have ordered a helmet and will research and put effort, time and money into building a kit that I can use so any information on sources, types, and historical armour would be great.

Hi Paleologos

Do you mean, you wan to get inspired in autentic greek armor, & know about their historical period, for your SCA kit reconstruction?

Or you are selling your SCA Kit, to become a more accurate reenactor?

Dont know how SCA works, but I guess its more about Battle sport than reenacting the hole historical period like reenactors would do right?

Excuse my lack of English & knowledge about SCA Smile

Okay- I´m starting a new kit, a new set of armour for SCA combat, but I want it to be as period, and correct as possible within the safetybounds that we have.
The helmet I have bought is a Chaldician inspired in its looks and style, and the documentation for it is good.
I want the rest of my armour, greaves, linothorax or threedisc breastplate to be wellfounded and within the timeperiod and region fo Chaldician equipment.

So- what kind of breast / torso armour should i get?
what style of greaves?
Clothing ?
Crest for helmet?
Shieldstyle?

Any input on how to build/create a good impression is welcome.

My Friend, since SCA its not our area, I recomend you to contact the Greek SCA group -- http://www.greyhawkes.com/blacksword/sp ... tolist.htm

I think one fellow RAT is a member of that group, called Hibernicus.

But your helmet is around 500 BC, so I guess you can do a linothorax, bell cuirass or a later muscular cuirass.

Hi,

I too would suggest a linothorax for accuracy however; is that acceptable protection for the SCA?

Were the bars added to that helmet for SCA protection or was that the way the helmet was originally? I’ve only seen that design (the Corinthian-like style) without the extra face bars added.

You could try posting this question in the RAT Greek section but again… I think an SCA group would be better to speak with. What the SCA may deem acceptable protection ‘might not’ … might... might not be "recreation-accurate" too.... I'm just not sure.

A linothorax exceeds SCA minimums for protection.

That helmet needs the non-historic bar grille .

One nice thing about some versions of the "corinthian" is that the eyr/face slot opening can be made small enough to meet SCA minimums and still look historic!!

I'm making mine from bronze!

Sooo, you were the one who got that helm. I was one click away to getting it myself, but I decided to wait and save up for my new Roman helm. Linothorax should be fine for body protection if done right. Its not easy to make but once it is done you will have a great looking kit. There are various people who make great greaves that would look great with your kit. One of the nicest I have seen is west coast armory. Good luck with your kit!
