Thracian reenactors and/or replica arms and armour wanted
#1
Hi, Discovery Channel is making a two hour documentary about ancient
Thrace and are very interested in Thracian weapons, armour, and
tactics. Filming is due to finish some time in July I think. They
want information on groups who do Thracian historical re-enactment or
own replica Thracian weapons and armour. Although based in London,
they are doing most of the filming in Bulgaria, so anybody interested
might have to go to London or Bulgaria in June-July. They also want to interview
experts on Thracian military matters!!

Anybody interested, please contact me.

Cheers,

Chris

That is incorrect, there is no record of that among the Thracians.

Xenophanes describes the Thracians as being "lighthaired and grey eyed", though "They were said to be largely redhaired." The Thracians "were large, powerfully built men, ... and a skin white, delicate and cold; and they had a tendency to put on flesh. They are spoken of as straighthaired and with their hair dressed in a kind of topknot. The chinbeard of the Thracian ... is characteristic of his race ... the cheeks are shaved, apart from short sidewhiskers." C A H Vol VIII, p 544 There is also a reference to Thracians shaving their foreheads, to stop an enemy grabbing the hair during hand-to-hand combat

The Agathyrsi (a Skythian tribe that had many Thracian customs) painted both their faces and their limbs with indelible designs (ie tatoos -distinctive tribal marks), while the nobles also died their hair blue.

Papazoglu draws attention to the hairstyle worn by the Thracian Abantes, as being apparently the same as the Moesians and some Arab tribes (taken from Plutarch, Life of Theseus. 5). The front of the head was apparently shaved (in the case of the Abantes, in order to prevent the enemy getting a ready hold in battle - presumably similar in style to the hair worn by the woodland Ottawa tribe of the North American Great Lakes region?): " 'The Abantes' adds Plutarch, were the first people to cut their hair in this fashion; they had not learnt it from the Arabians, as some think, nor did they imitate the Moesians, but did it because they were hand-to-hand fighters - to avoid giving the enemy the chance to sieze them by the hair." From Fanula Papazoglu, The Central Balkan Tribes in Pre-Roman Times. Triballi, Autariatae, Dardanians, Scordisci and Moesians. Amsterdam: Adolf M. Hakkert, 1978, p.460.

There is a tribe(some villages) in modern Thrace, near where I live, that matches the description of the ancient Thracians.Note that most Greeks are neither light haired nor grey eyed. These people are known as "Pomakoi" and were forced to become Muslims by the Turks. However, their current religion is a mix of Muslim and an unknown to us religion, they have their own customs and some of their God's names resemble the ancient Greek ones. Now,there are arguements that these people, who live in Northern mountenous Greek Thrace are actually Bulgarian tribes who were isolated and thus we know very little of them. But some researchers claim that their language(yes they have their own language)in not Bulgarian,or at least it does not originate in Bulgarian but it's an ancient thracian idiom.Only some years ago they were allowed to be tought their language in their own schools, with the Greek.Sadly, for many years we Greeks and owr governments considered these people Turkish, because of their supposedly Muslim religion. But if you ask them, they say they're not Turkish and actually thei dislike them more than we Greeks do.
It is not sure and there are counter arguements but these people are probably the last Thracian left.

Hey Josef, your father must have very strong genes!Cince your mother is pontian she must be rather dark haired and dark eyed and skined! Smile
Have you heard of the Pomaks?Modern Thracians are not particularly dark haired but they are not blond either.Actually they do not differ from other Greeks. In many places in Thrace there are Slavs, who now cannot be identified of course! But because the place was owned by the Bulgarians for centuries it's logical there are Slavs among the other modern Thracian tribes.

Quote:Josef & Giannis, dont start these conversations, I will starting my family tracks to Trabzon, Byzantium, Macedon, then to Peloponessos & Spain, then Corsica & Latin & Anglo America.

But of course people tend to get offended by that  ... forget it Smile

Yes as my people the Pontian, my family are dark or brown haired, but some times appear some red or almost blond haired among my family childrens. My Byzan-corsican-sparto family was kind of mixey.

[Image: greeko-corsicansorspartans.jpg] Some Greko-corsicans or sparto-byzantines, also of cretan descent. Not Blond among Dorians
================================================

Hey, why the guys of the program, wouldn't pay for at least traveling?

it sound odd to me since who ever comes to participate its making a favor to th' people program. What is the benefit...just appear on TV? :?

Well for now just one Trakian wants to appear, where is the rest?
ah! just that tells all.

Are those really Cretans , what are they running from? Big Grin P D
