Reconstructing a 6th c. Baldenheim spangenhelm
#61
To check: VIth century Kertch or Kerch spangenhelm, maybe Avar origin, may had a noseguard. However this would be an exception.

Is it a helmet of the Baldenheim type? I'm only talking about this specific type.

Egfroth,

Quote:Without being able to personally inspect the helmets, it's hard to be sure, but these helmets seem quite complete without nasals.

I'm inclined to agree.

Quote:Are we perhaps looking at the idea that because nasals were common in later helmets, Migration period helmets must have had them as well?

Good question. It isn't my assumption, though. I was just quoting the website's description of the helmet. Here's the original link : [url:3nsa9cni]http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/ho/06/eust/hod_42.50.1.htm[/url]

Frankly, I prefer not to have a nose guard on my helmet anyway since it's more common in later types as you say. Smile

Here is a drawing of the Kertch (Ukrainia) spangenhelm :

Don't know if it fits in with the type but, anyone have information on the horn spangenhelm from Cologne? I believe it was found in a childs grave.

Does anyone know how the veil of chainmail was attached to the helmet for protecting the neck ? Were there holes in the rim of the bowl at the back ? Or maybe the mail was attached to a leather lining ?

Theo, both the cheekguards and the helmet bowls have large holes all around their rim. Through these holes goes a leather lace that keeps on the leather edging.

Oh, I see them now. I thought some didn't have holes around the rim but I was mistaken it seems. Thank you, Marcus.

Now I'm wondering if the chainmail was backed by some padding or a leather sheet so that the rings didn't rub against the neck :o

Yes, you can see it here (Véréronce helmet if I remember):

Wow, thanks Agraes.

Strange, I wasn't expecting the rings to be so large. To me, they look larger than the standard 8mm rings most reenactors use today.- Confusedhock:

Great pic, thanks, I didn't know about that one. I might to mine this way. I think the mail neckguard would be a lot more protective this way!

I'm not 100% convinced though... Was the leather really in context on the helmet? Or was it perhaps an adition of the conservationist to display the preserved chainmail?

The website of the Dauphinée museum don't give more details...

Here a big picture:

It seems there wasn't the leather garnment on the original find, maybe this picture is a reconstruction. I guess it's likely they find some leather on it however...

Thanks for the link.

By the way, I believe this is currently the best work on these helmets:

I should have guessed. It looked to be in too good a condition

But I was thinking maybe a padded backing was used instead. Like on Egfroth's helmet. Maybe it works so well that you don't need the chainmail

Either way I want some protection since I don't want my hair getting meshed into the mail.

I think myself I will opt for leather for my own spangenhelm
