Segs on coins
#1
Well, I'm very certain they're segs on these two coins sestercii from the time of Marcus Aurelius (that or their ribcages are showing):

(note the soldier to the left seems to be wearing hamata)

Just found them interesting.

Wow, they sure are.

Just as interesting perhaps is that they look mounted ?

I've never heard of cavalrymen wearing segs.

They certainly seem to be wearing segmentata, when are the first two dated?

I think you'll find the segmentata-wearing figures are standing behind the mounted figures and are not themselves mounted. Usual Roman problem with perspective, parallax, and fitting photorealistic images on coin dies ;-)

Yes I would agree with Mike, it looks pretty clear that they are standing in the near distance, behind who ever is depicted on horseback!

Looks like segs, or perhaps a long period of famine!!

It must be me but I can't make out anything except a few vaguely Roman-like figures and a horse. They are wearing helmets . There is a shield and a few spears. That's about all.

Dan, compare the horizontal bands on the body armour of some figures at the back and the left, against the smooth cuiraisses and dotted armour on the other figures. They're big horizontal bands.

To what else would you attribute the banding on the torsos in the background to, or you can't make it out? :? In the first image the figure to the right is wearing a musculata.....

How would you illustrate rows of scales on such small figures?

How do you know he is wearing armour at all? Why must it be musculata and not mail?
