Well, I'm very certain they're segs on these two coins sestercii from the time of Marcus Aurelius (that or their ribcages are showing):

Just as interesting perhaps is that they look mounted ?
I've never heard of cavalrymen wearing segs.

Yes I would agree with Mike, it looks pretty clear that they are standing in the near distance, behind who ever is depicted on horseback!

It must be me but I can't make out anything except a few vaguely Roman-like figures and a horse. They are wearing helmets . There is a shield and a few spears. That's about all.

Dan, compare the horizontal bands on the body armour of some figures at the back and the left, against the smooth cuiraisses and dotted armour on the other figures. They're big horizontal bands.

To what else would you attribute the banding on the torsos in the background to, or you can't make it out? :? In the first image the figure to the right is wearing a musculata.....
