Belt Plates
#1
Does anyone have photos of the original belt plates found in Porto Vecchio France or one of the many found in Vindonissa. I am referring to the belt plate with three figures on it from Porto Vecchio and the Vindonissa belt plate that has an elaborate hexagonal shape.

Any help would be appreciated Smile

Thanks

Paolo

I do not have photographs of the original plates from Vindonissa, (Paul Mullins may have though  )

I have drawings from the Vindonissa catalogue here..

There are also some beautiful reconstructions by Holger Ratzdorf too look under Roman militaria item 705 and 706 here..

Peroni,

Thanks for the response, the drawings, and Holger's repros.

How do I contact Paul Mullins?

The belt plates from Holger are great. However, the Vindonissa ones you have indicated to me are not the ones I am after. The vindonissa belt plate I am interested in is # 952 on the belt plate drawings you sent me.

Would you happen to have a larger drawing of # 952 and any details such as size, if it was tinned, silvered, etc.

Thanks

Paolo

Aurificina Treverica is a vendor who makes #952. I have a set. Brass, mostly tinned as you can see.

Thanks Jim for the response. Smile I already have both those belt plates on my computer from that site.

I was hoping to get the originals or some drawing of the originals so that my armorer can duplicate them for my centurio kit. Sometimes when things are reproduced, they may have certain details missing that the armorer decided to leave out or just could not do them.

Thus I like to have the original drawing or the original photo to make sure all the details are included.

However, if you think that the reproduction of these belts is true to the original, then I will consider buying them from this armorer. 8)

Generally my armor and its various components are made for me by the venerable Brian Stobbs.

Thanks again Big Grin

I have to say that Erik's work is superb, and after making the formal order I received an email around a week and a half later saying they were ready to ship Confusedhock:

And I have also seen Tarby's belt- and can vouch for it. Superb quality workmanship.

Thanks all for the responses. I am encouraged by your opinions and also the apparent great service. Of course it may take longer since I live in the US.

Thanks

now here's a rule: search first, ask later :-P P

Think I found it:

H. Bernard, J.-Cl. Bessac, P. Mardikian, & M. Feugère. L'épave romaine de marbre de Porto Novo. in Journal of Roman Archaeology 11, 1998.

Btw, there's an article online about this ship (in German) containing one of the belt plates and the buckle:

An interesting sword sheath was found there as well by the way ... ;-) )

The belt plates by Erik are very good as far as I can see, note however, that he is not using/offering the original buckle (still attached to one of the 2 plates found) but another one, from Vindonissa perhaps.
