Historic Scutum experience
#1
At the AD43 event I discovered something interesting about the scutums we're making

Dew fall on scutums that have not been properly sealed causes the hide glue to soften! It is more pronounced on scutums with linen faces than that of scutums with hide faces

One linen faced scutum actually bled glue through the linen! An hour in the sun seemed to alleviate the problem

We will no longer face scutums with linen only!

Yikes!!

Confusedhock: Confusedhock: Confusedhock: Doesn't bode well for my scutums then! Mind you, my Augustan by Len Morgan got fairly wet in the rain we had, I believe it is linen faced, but will not swear to that...... could be the difference in the way the moisture was deposited maybe!

It depends a lot on what kind of glue is used. I don't think Len uses hide glue does he?

We use hide glue...

The scutum that linen covered but waxed faired much better

I am seriously tempted to let a hide covered scutum get rained on or wet on down just to see what would happen and then see if we could repress it into shape if it warps or starts to come apart.

That does indeed explain it. Some glue is waterproof, other isn't

I haven't used hide glue yet. But it is on my list of things to play with. Can I ask are you using the pre-mixed hide glue in a bottle or the dry flake that you mix yourself? If the dry flake what strength are you using? What have you used for keeping it warm? How do you apply? Any tips or info to share?

Thanks.

Hmmm, on close examination of Lens scutum, he doesn't cover it with anything! Other than paint! Seems you would get a linen covering for 180GBP!

I would simply seal my scutum with a few extra coats of paint, or beeswax.

Are you sure it's paint straight onto the board? Then it's VERY expensive indeed... Confusedhock:

HIDE GLUE

We use both granular hide glue and the TiteBond hide glue.

I cannot determine any differences in strength of the bond. Both are susceptible to water and moisture after setting up. Both work the same and take the same to dry and set up. The only difference is that the Titebond is ready to use.

Keep the granular hide glue workable in an electric crock pot.. get a used one at a thrift store or flea market..

I waxed my scutum! No more worries of moisture instrusion messing up my hide glue bonds, and it really just LOOKS better - the wax brings out the color of the milk paint and adds a glossy sheen - the pictures are in reverse order - so start at the bottom of the post...
