I am not so sure it was an execution in a military or jus gladii punishment sense. Why would you execute somebody and leave a perfectly good sword strapped on them after the fact?

I wonder if they were not murdered or assassinated to settle an old score and were buried to hide all evidence.

Blades are in remarkable shape.

Cheers!!

I think it's normally known as the Canterbury Murder Grave. The first suggestion I read was that the two soldiers game across someone up to no good, who mudered them and quickly buried them along with their swords which might have been difficult to keep or sell without attracting suspicion. I don't know how true that would be but it seems to work as one possible explanation, although there mut be numerous others.

Must have been someone they knew, or thought they could deal with, then they were jumped from behind while the other/s distracted them! You would think it would be difficult to take a couple of legionairies on their own, unless you did the dirty and jumped them from behind!!

As a "Man of Kent" I can confirm that murder is the generally accepted theory. Many moons ago I attended some evening classes given by members of the Canterbury Archaeological Trust and this find was discussed.

I think that these soldiers were executed, probably destroyed. The fact that the swords are buried by them, it means that the executors were going armed well, with weapon of the same quality or better (soldiers also probably) for it they did not need them. Probably these swords were used for an abominable act of murder, for this reason also they were executed and his weapon there deposited, no soldier having theirs, it wanted to carry this weapon stained with innocent blood.
