Helmet choices for musculata?

Except traveling by sea then was not like traveling on a modern big ship with the very high degree of safety. So while if the seas were good it was better than marching it was still much more of an unknown. No storm forcasts etc. From reading about people in different times in the past on ships it was normaly a very scary experence. Lots and lots of praying are the one normSmile

So they at least tried to keep the coast in sight. Besides, travelling on land in a war zone has its own dangers, and where they any less than on the sea? anything up to 11,000 ships, or even more, in the fleets means there couldn't have been a real shortage of volunteers, so it can't have been that bad, and there is testimony to navy service being a fine career.

Of course as I said it had good and bad points. Many probobly haited it and many probobly really liked it. But you did have a good chance of getting in a ship wreck or drowning or getting blown out to sea and starving etc.

Nope, volunteers for the classis as soldiers.

That doesn't exclude legionaries having to fight on ships now and again, nor the other way around.
