Spartan Total Warrior for PS2
#1
Hi all,

I recently bought a game for my new PS2 (yes, I know, I'm behind in the times) called Spartan Total Warrior. I wasn't sure if anyone on RAT has played it before? I think the game is really fun to play, however, the history is absolutely terrible. Imagine Gladiator meets 300 and someone has a really messed up history book. Supposedly it takes place in 300BC with the Roman Empire, under Emperor Tiberius, invading all of Greece and trying to conquer everything. The lone Spartan warrior travels from Sparta to the Black Sea, the ruins of Troy, Athens, the Alps, and the heart of Rome itself.

The Classics Department at GWU got a kick out of the game when I brought in a review. Many of our favorite mythological characters show up for no reason including: Ares, Medusa, Beowulf (?), and the Minotaur (in the sewers of Rome mind you). Anyway, the game is really fun, and even though the history is terrible, I think it's a good laugh for anybody interested.

I got the game for $25 I think, I'm sure it is cheaper at other places. If anyone is looking for something fun to play, or needs a game to get someone as a present, definitely check it out.

I agree completely -- after a while killing just gets kinda old. I've heard God of War is really good, but I haven't had a chance to play it yet. I know the second one is coming out really soon, so I'll definitely see about getting that.

I just can't get over how horrible the storyline is in the game, but I was surprised at how accurate the Roman soldiers were portrayed. I mean you can actually see the different types of legionaries wearing hamata, segmentata and the like. Pretty cool if you ask me. Big Grin

Yeah, Spartan is fun - not the best, but it's a good hack and slash if you just feel like chilling for a while.

Don't be concerned about history, it was intended to be that way. Apparently CA just thought it would be cool to see Sparta at their peak fight the Romans at their peak... and so they make the timeline a point when neither was especially dominant. The legionaries may not look as they should for that time (obviously they look post-BC) but at least they look better than the Spartans, who never looked as they do in the game.

Good point -- who would have thought that the Spartans wore blue uniforms and sported leopard skins around their waists?? I think the Legionaries would look surprisingly accurate if the game took place in the 1st Century AD, its a shame that in 300BC the Romans were far away from lorica segmentata. I love how the centurions are a good 8 feet tall as well. Still, a good game -- I can't get enough of the action. Big Grin

Damn, I wish you didn't post the GoWII videos, Gioi... I already knew that you'd fight Zeus at the end, but I didn't know about the Titanomachy. Sad GoWII isn't released here until later this month, sadly...

Just remember, spoilers next time. Wink

I always used the twin swords the most, but for the battle with Ares I used the aspis/kopis combo (since it has good defence and attack). Though the most fun weapon to use was, to me, the Spear... even though he uses it somewhat abstractly and not like a hoplite, it still feels cool impaling Romans, especially when they're on fire. I really like the way the spear works in the game. However inaccurate, it has a long reach and really gets the job done. I found that using the shield and kopis together in "The Ruins of Troy" and "The Gates of Saturn" worked really well. There are so many gorges and deep valleys where you can literally knock the Romans off of the wall and gain indirect kills. It is very effective if you're outnumbered or in a hurry. I generally prefer the blades of Athena, but the defense is really poor and I find that I get damaged very quickly. I also like the hammer too -- a new found glory for me, one hit and the enemy is down -- I like that. It's too slow for prolonged use however. Gimme something quick and deadly Big Grin
