I can heartily recommend two novels by Lindsey Clarke:
The War at Troy - a modern "retelling" of Homer's Illiad which is very welcome after years of huffing and puffing my way through the actual thing! As far as I can tell it sticks pretty closely to the Illiad (but hell I am no expert!).
The Return From Troy - again a modern "retelling" of Homer's Oddysey.
Thoroughly enjoyable, and actually helped with an understanding of the original texts!!!
