Reenacting and Book

I am really looking forward to reenactment. Can anyone recommend a decent place to get the whole kit at a reasonable price. I am also looking for a great book or books that explain with text and pictures the evolution of Roman armor and warfare from start to finish.

Try e.g. Adrian Goldsworthy "The complete roman army" to get into.
For a first overview also some of the osprey publishings are good (like the ones about clothing in the roman army).

Old but still nice to read is Peter Connolly "Greece and Rome at war".

There are also one or two books on the market showing Reenacters, i believe one of Dan?

But my advice is to get a contact to an existing group next to you and starting communication to them.
They will help you to find materials (often to a good price) and teach you to get an eye, what is good and what not.

Getting everything you need from one source might not be possible, depending on the requirements of the group(s) you participate with and your own needs and standards of accuracy, etc. But a good place to go to find out a lot more is the Legio XX site,

It has a big page of Suppliers, plus recommended sources at the bottom of most of the equipment pages. It also has a Bibliography, listing many of the recommended books. I always vote for Connolly, Sumner, and Bishop & Coulston for starters. Plus you'll want to spend a few weeks browsing through the RAT board and reading up on all the equipment and reenacting topics, including the Marketplace (notably the Deepeeka section).

But yeah, it's a very good idea to talk to groups in your areas, and see if one or more of them are what you want. Then follow what they advise. And keep the questions coming, though you'll get better answers the more specific your questions are.

it looks like i'm going to have to start my own long island chapter. that could prove to be difficult. I may be dressing up myself and looking in the mirror for a good time. HAHAHAHA. It's a shame most long islanders don't care enough about history to enjoy it when they can. I can't see myself driving all the way to upstate NY or to another state in the tri state. For a large event OK...but the average meeting of the minds could prove to be a bit much.

Hey Anthony, I also started on my own. Look into going to events hosted by other Historical societies, such as the SCA, or maybe check out ARMA, or the local universities/museums. Once you have all your gear, a website helps, and then you can start recruiting. You'd be surprised who shows interest.

We're here to help though! So ask away if you need any other tips. So don't hesitate if you have any questions. That Matt Amt guy has also been known to be pretty helpful. :wink:

You know..i just got finished perusing some SCA websites and my local chapters A. look pretty corny for what they're trying to do. and B. seem to only offer medieval and rennaisance period reenactment. Yet another dead end. UFFA!!

well it appears as though traveling a bit may be necessary until I can get something going on Long Island. There has to be a way to "advertise" an ancient Roman reenactment group out here. I want to really see how many Long Islanders are really willing to muster up.

If you are interested in starting a group in your local area -- I strongly urge you to start with a website.

We recently started a website here in the Atlanta, GA, area to increase recruiting -- and have had 4 new members sign up in the last 2 months.

I started it with Tripod.com -- costs me about $20 a month to host it. Very easy to set up, and in a day you can have your own website.

Thanks so much. We had a great time at the event -- the museum that sponsored it provided a great deal to facilitate the re-enactors who participated.

The reporter was a GREAT sport. I enjoyed working with him, he kitted up with no complaints, and had a great sense of humor.

Our Optio, Chris Stewart (Cassius Antonius Crispus on this forum) has done wonders with web design and graphics -- he really deserves the laudes for the appearance of the site.
