Gladius Scabbard Books
#1
Could anyone recommend a good book on gladii scabbards which contains along with the pictures the details of the materials used, the sizes or dimensions of the scabbards, the decoration on the scabbards, the approximate date (I'm looking for 1st century scabbards). Preferably a book with color plates is desirable however any detailed book is fine.

There is a good book by Jurgen Obmann that was recommended to me for pugio scabbards. Thus I was wondering if something of that nature was around for gladii scabbards.

Thanks

Paolo

No, just black/white pictures.
I don't know the commercial library-system of the USA.
In Germany it's possible to order books or single articles at www.subito-doc.de .

Tobias,

I went to the website you sent me. I tried to register to search and purchase the literature you supplied to me. However, I did not see the US as one of the countries. I searched further and they mentioned that documents will no longer be sent to end-users outside of non-german speaking countries. Thus I cannot get what you suggested. Sad (

Thanks Big Grin

tobias,

Just wondering if this literature of yours is a book. If it is, can you give me the ISSN (or ISBN) number so that I can do a search.

Thanks

As i said, i don't know if such a system also exist in the USA, so i can't tell you.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to visit a public or university library in your neighborhood and ask there for a sending library.

The Book is:
Jahrbuch RGZM 43, 1996

Perhaps you also can order it her directly, but not to lend, just to buy.
http://web.rgzm.de/401.0.html

Ask directly for the number and the part about the gladii, cause the book were published in two parts.

Write to:
Verlag des
Römisch-Germanischen Zentralmuseums
Ernst-Ludwig-Platz 2
55116 Mainz
Germany

Or Mail to

Thanks Tobias, Big Grin

I am going to try and see if I can contact them at the museum. Do you really think however, that the book is worth the buying. I know they are black and white photos. However, they must be good enough so that the details are visible.

I hope I can get it.

Personally i think yes, cause i don't know any other that good describtion.
But it's on german and the pcitures are in b/w, so i don't know if they bring, what you search exactly.

Otherwise there are also very interesting articles about the Kataphraktarier and roman ships. So perhaps you can profit also from other parts of the book.

Good luck with all that, since there isn't anything nearly like it in English that I've ever heard of! You'd have to get 20 or 30 books and journals, each with one or two drawings or photos, generally black and white. Bishop & Coulston, JRMES, etc.

There are some nice color photos of the Pompeii scabbard from the Guttmann collection on the Legio VI Victrix site, and I think a few other scabbards on that Roman Coins site. But all the information is scattered all over.
