More pugio stuff..
#1
Thought I’d send you a few pictures of a pugio that I have been re-working. It's an old type A pugio I had lying around.

I made the hangers from brass rod to replace the original nasty brazed-on jobs. I also re-shaped the grip plates. I know that they are still inaccurate as they are cast brass, but hey limited resources!

The hangers were bent to shape each comprising two lengths of wire brazed at the loop.

The rivets are simple brass nails which pass through hemispherical brass cups that I made myself. The cups were then enameled in red. The photos show up where I haven’t finished cleaning up the rivet heads, but that’s a minor detail!

Passable????

Thanks!

It's something called 'cold enameling' Basically a two-part epoxy resin.

I haven't got a kiln to do the proper glass stuff!

Ooh, I did get a book on enamelling and thought "Eek", but that sounds more like a less expensive option.

Nice Pugio! What type of blade? Ribbed or fullered? I should maybe have that one memorized by now, but....... :?

Nice one Jim, thanks for the link. That's the stuff I used.

Basically you have to mix EXACTLY 2 parts colour to 1 part hardener. Any deviation, either way, results the enamel not setting. I got this important tip from Madoc, who did a lovely job of enameling a Deepeeka Celtic scabbard.

My pleasure. I'm so excited about this stuff I keep having visions of totally enamelled helmets and scabbards (down boy!). Hmmm.... niello....
